Year 9 Careers

In order to support our Year 9 pupils in their decision making for future choices in Key Stage 4 and Post-16 education and training, all Year 9 pupils attend the Careers in Focus event at the Great Yorkshire Showground, Harrogate.

Pupils are made aware of all post-16 opportunities available to them. They are able to:

  • Talk to a wide range of experts on their careers
  • Explore new careers previously not considered
  • Participate in activities related to specific careers
  • Sample the skills required for particular careers
  • Listen to short talks by exhibitors on what they do
  • Talk to companies and colleges about apprenticeships
  • Talk to universities, colleges and training providers about courses available and how to access them

Following on from this event Year 9 pupils and parents are invited to the School’s annual Careers Convention and Options Evening. This event offers the chance to speak to all the local colleges, local companies and all the Armed Forces as well as teaching staff, about the courses they can offer and give information on possible progression routes within the different subject areas. It is an opportunity for parents/pupils to consider the options available in Industry and the Colleges and is especially important to Year 9 pupils as it will assist them in making an informed decision about their future optional subject choices.

WORK EXPERIENCE- Pupils should:

THINK - about where they would like to carry out their work experience and then who they know, or who their friends or family may know, that could help them secure a placement. Also consider transport, will they be able to get to their placement on time every day? If they cannot think of a suitable placement they should visit the Careers Room, where they will be shown a list of local companies who have offered work experience placements to pupils in the past. This list will include a contact name and number for them to telephone.

GET IN CONTACT - speak to someone in authority at their chosen employer and ask if they would be able to offer a two week placement in September. If they agree, make a note of their name and contact number.

INFORM SCHOOL – upon returning to school in the New Year, call in to the Careers Room to inform a member of staff where they would like to go for their placement and the name and contact number of the person who has agreed to offer a placement.
